Until recently, commercial software was developed in third generation languages using manual coding techniques.  This resulted in lack of consistency, poor documentation, and the proliferation of errors.  The last several years have seen a tremendous shift in the software development industry.  This is largely due to the introduction and acceptance of  Object Oriented Design and analysis techniques, as well as computer assisted software engineering.  New tools and methodologies facilitate automation of the software development process, offering superior quality and productivity benefits.

The relational database model has been in existence for many years and forms the foundation of modern software implementations.  The strength of the relational model is enhanced with graphical design tools for both data and process modeling.  This results in a more thorough, comprehensive design that is  easier to communicate to management and end users.  Software engineering tools, and object oriented development tools allow the  developer to concentrate on business logic rather than traditional low level tasks such as screen input/output and database updates, increasing productivity and quality far beyond traditional methods.  Software development has evolved from the purely technical domain to a comprehensive approach of solving business problems and issues.

It is imperative that software developers follow a structured, rigorous approach to ensure application quality and fulfillment of user requirements.  There are several competing methodologies within the industry, including traditional waterfall approaches, Rational Unified Process (RUP), Six Sigma, SCRUM, Extreme Programming and other Agile methods.  Consulting services offered by Astron Technologies Inc. utilize combined best practices from several methodologies, adapting to the specific situations of our clients' projects..
